A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Fletch Arrows
Step 1: Get out your arrow fletching tools
Step 2: Strip and clean your arrow of the old fletching
- Measure or mark the beginning and end-point of the existing fletching material so that you can replace it exactly.
- Take a sharp knife and strip the existing fletching off of the arrow shafts, peeling them from the bottom up. Be careful not to scrape or damage the shaft.
- Clean the shaft with rubbing alcohol to remove all remaining residue and to allow the new glue to adhere to the shaft.
Step 3: Select fletching materials – Vanes and feathers
- Secure your clean arrow shaft in the clamp.
- Apply fletching glue along the base of the arrow shaft where you measured the location of the previous fletching material.
- Attach the replacement fletching material to the shaft and allow to dry
- Clean off any excess glue.
Feathers vs. Vanes
- Feathers tend to be more durable than vanes but can be louder in flight.
- Vanes are more delicate but less noisy in flight. Arrow vanes also are available in lots of different colors.
- Fletching Glue for attaching the new material
- Note: You can also purchase a roll-on cresting kit which can be a quicker solution.
